Perhaps a recycled topic. But I thought just the basic essentials of cinematography. Like things that are always a must, regardless of script, budget, etc.

Im sure we all have something to contribute. I posted this on another site and thought it was decent advice.

Combintion of artist and scientist. I dare say the science of it is more important. At least when beginning. Some may disagree. I wouldnt concern myself with stlye at all until a solid understanding of the science.

For example, many of the DPs heroics arent so much their style, but their ability to match a complex shot that was done months or even years ago. Like maybe the shot was orignially done during the summer at dusk in Africa. Now you have to match perfectly and its now winter at noon, or maybe even midnight in Texas.

    Don't forget Luck.

Many times a shot is nailed because you were in the right place at the right time an were able to gain camera speed in time to grab it.

I agree with you though. Science is better early on. Then when you know how to control your FC and lights it is time to play with it. Create something different.

    Good Luck

    Uh...you'd need a camera...I guess.

And film. Film would be nice.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Not really. But you might need a light meter. Let the Camera Op take care of the camera

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Thats a given - for anything and everything in life. Obviously we have no control over that.

However, acknowledging luck after a project rather than hogging all the credit is admirable and respectable.

I would say that what is fundamental to a DP is vision.
